Amyris (Nasdaq: AMRS  ) reported earnings on Aug. 8. Here are the numbers you need to know.

The 10-second takeaway
 For the quarter ended June 30 (Q2), Amyris whiffed on revenues and exceeded expectations on earnings per share.

Compared to the prior-year quarter, revenue contracted significantly and GAAP loss per share shrank.

Margins dropped across the board.

Revenue details
 Amyris logged revenue of $19.3 million. The eight analysts polled by S&P Capital IQ wanted to see a top line of $36.2 million on the same basis. GAAP reported sales were 40% lower than the prior-year quarter's $32.0 million.

EPS details
 EPS came in at -$0.66. The three earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ predicted -$0.76 per share. GAAP EPS were -$0.81 for Q2 against -$0.95 per share for the prior-year quarter.

Margin details
 For the quarter, gross margin was -22.7%, 3,170 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was -234.1%, 10,030 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was -243.0%, 10,980 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter.

Looking ahead
 Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $9.7 million. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is -$0.63.

Next year's average estimate for revenue is $76.1 million. The average EPS estimate is -$2.92.

Investor sentiment
