McDuel to the McDeath
McDonald's Price (7/28/98): $67 1/8

Did somebody Duel McDonald's (NYSE: MCD)? Shame on us to let this chain grow to more than 23,000 restaurants in 111 countries without giving it the proper pro-con debate it deserves. Hungry? Excellent. Let's order...
Talking box: Welcome to McDonald's, can I take your order please?
Fool: Uh, yeah, I'd like one Duel with Cheese, hold the let up.
Talking box: I'm sorry, we stop serving Duels after 10:30 in the morning.
Fool: How about one of those Value Meal Duels.
Talking box: Sure. What would you like with it?
Fool: For the bull case, I think I'll go with Chris Rugaber (TMF RFK)
Talking box: Sure. Anything else?
Fool: What about that Rick Munarriz (TMF Edible) for the bear?
Talking box: Uh oh, is he still on the menu? I thought we had gotten rid of him?
Fool: Really, I thought he'd outlive the McRib.
Talking box: You're in luck, the manager says that he has a few Ricks in the utility closet. Drive around for your Duel -- and have a nice day!
Gee, I guess this week's Duel is going to be McDifferent. And you, not only do you deserve a break today, but you --

McDonald's possesses one of the most successful, recognizable brand names in the world, second perhaps to Coca-Cola in international recognition. It dominates the U.S. fast-food market, with 32.5% market share among the top ten "Quick Service Restaurants" (QSRs). In 1997, its U.S. sales of $17.1 billion were more than the next three largest hamburger-based fast-food restaurants combined.

The Bear...
Earlier this month Nicaragua welcomed McDonald's back after an eleven-year absence. It was a cause celebre as the lines circled the block for a Big Mac fix. The country's Vice President, Enrique Bolaos, declared it a victory now that foreign investors would see the golden arches and tread carefully back into the country once under Marxist rule.
