Globe Trotting Duel
Does your portfolio have geographic boundaries? This week we examine the practice of investing in foreign companies. Is it safe? Is it necessary? Will you take a pounding by the pound or will a mark leave its mark?
Rick Munarriz (TMF Edible) and Selena Maranjian (TMF Selena) are Dueling Fools. Rick thinks that a little overseas diversification is a good thing. Selena thinks you can stay stateside and still play the world economies. The lines have been drawn. Who will win?
It's going to be a Duel of global dimensions, that's for sure. And don't miss this week's Duel Flashback, where we look back at our tag-team lottery debate.
You Get to Vote!
Once you've read the arguments and the rebuttals, it's your time to cast your vote. We'll tabulate results each week and revisit them from time to time to see whether you were right! As always, we invite you to join us in the Dueling Fools Message board to continue the duel.
[Any suggestions, comments, praise, or flames, please send them along to the Dueling Fools Team.]
No mas. I concede defeat. I know, I know, it's a bit early to yield an "uncle" to Uncle Sam, but the truth is that, if anything, Selena's pending case for keeping your portfolio flying domestic probably won't go far enough. There are fifty states out there and that is really way too many to monitor. You should empty out your stock pool to the point where you are only wading in those that are based out of your home state. If you happen to live in a wide state then do your legwork a favor and stick to only those within a fifty mile radius of your home.
I speak Armenian and can converse well enough in it. But I can't read capital letters or typing in Armenian. And I can't understand Armenians who speak with a lot of "high-falootin'" five-syllable words. Park me in a foreign country and I'll probably find much to explore, admire, photograph and ponder. But it's unlikely that I'll ever be able really and truly to understand the culture, inside out. Perhaps after several years I'll understand it very well, but not completely.
