The Wise Guys
Merrill Lynch price (5/4/99): $81 1/4

Can banking on the Wise be Foolish? This week we don the green polyester and take a look at the country's largest full-service brokerage house, Merrill Lynch (NYSE: MER).

Rick Munarriz (TMF Edible) feels the company's prospects remain bullish. Bill Barker (TMF Max) feels a "Stop! Loss!" order is more prudent.

Who will win your bid? You get to decide. And don't miss this week's Duel Flashback, where we take a look back at the our American Express (NYSE: AXP) Duel to see which Fool left home without it.

You Get to Vote!

Once you've read the arguments and the rebuttals, it's your time to cast your vote. We'll tabulate results each week and revisit them from time to time to see whether you were right! As always, we invite you to join us in the Dueling Fools Message board to continue the duel.

[Any suggestions, comments, praise, or flames, please send them along to the Dueling Fools Team.]

The Bull...
A Fool backing the Wise? Sisyphus, take a breather. Let me roll that boulder up the hill for a while. Yet, oddly enough, this big old rock feels more like a pebble when you think about it.
The Bear...
The easy way to do this might be to just write a straight screed on the self-proclaimed poster-child for Wisdom. (Check out the use of the word "Wisdom" twelve times in this Merrill speech.)
