Tuesday, October 15, 1996 Iomega was up $1 Monday, closing at $24 (+4.35%). TODAY'S RECAP: Monday in the Iomega Folder... or, "Depth Takes a Holiday." Precious little of consequence passed through our Iomega Folder in the last 24 hours. Perhaps those who are inclined toward Deep Thought are waiting for the hard data that will arrive Thursday afternoon with Iomega's third quarter earnings report. One item that does have Fools buzzing is Intel's surprisingly strong earnings announcement yesterday after the close of trading: $1.48 per share, when only $1.25 was expected. This news has some wondering a) if Iomega will rise in sympathy with the rest of the tech sector in tomorrow's trading, and b) if Iomega might show a similar surprise when it reports on Thursday. Of course, such things are impossible for mortal Fools to know beforehand. REMINDER: To hear a tape replay of Iomega's Q3 Conference Call Thursday night, call 1-800-633-8284. The Password is 2021724. The tape will be available by approximately 6:30PM Eastern Time - Thursday, 10/17 -- and will remain available until midnight on Monday, 10/21. INDEX: Use the Search or Find feature of your word processor to locate the article number (Find: 1++, 3++, etc.)--or use AOL's Edit>>Find in Top Window Feature. If Find in Top Window is dimmed, just click on some text, anything, in the IOMG Today window and try again.

Once you digitize words, art, music, graphics, photos, reality, and virtual reality it means you can shrink the size of everything that is stored. This leads to:
- space saving - portability of huge amounts of info - ease of access - lower costs of storage - ease of transferring info local and globally - easy availability of knowledge to the most under privileged.
Think of the implications for libraries (home & public), sound systems (auto, boom boxes, home), photography (still & moving), business (inventory, lists, records - millions of applications across every segment - as well as the uses in education, medicine, the media, government, and the family), and of course, virtual reality. Vast storage with indexing and access tools plus an appropriate camera, phonograph, player, telephone, VCR, computer, and other telecommunications devices will be the next generation. Every OEM of telecommunications will need this capability as part of their product line. IMHO Iomega is the clear leader in seeing this potential. I'm making a huge bet that long term it will happen. I think that is Iomega's vision - let's get beyond day trading and keep our investing eye on the prize.
Don Noone - first post. 2+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Subj: Epson Zips Date: 96-10-14 13:37:27 EDT From: Sunraydoc
While checking out the Columbus CompUSA, I noticed there were lots of white Epson Zips on the shelf; didn't see any Iomega Zips. But I noticed something interesting that I haven't seen commented on before: The Epson Zip carries the Epson brand to the left of the slot. But on the right sits the Iomega name, in its usual spot just to the left of the Zip100 logo. As I understand it, Epson is a contract manufacturer, not a licensee. Under this arrangement, Iomega allows Epson to make some of the drives for their own label as a "private label" producer. Iomega obviously wants the consumer to remain aware whose technology this is; hence the Iomega name on the Epson drive. Pretty sharp on their part, IMO. I've yet to see a Panasonic drive---I'd be curious to see if Iomega pulled off a similar arrangement under the licensing agreement they have with Matsushita. Anyone? 3+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Subj: What I have read Date: 96-10-14 14:16:18 EDT From: Spike021
Ok all, just another update on the info coming into retail areas. Of the several magazines we get every month I am always on the look out for info on Zip, Jaz or Iomega and this has been a good month. So far I read a report that IO is beginning production on a higher capacity Zip drive to compete with the SyQuest (Is that pronounced SlimChance?) 230. Is supposed to be in the 230Meg capacity neighborhood. Also a new marketing product, a stand alone Iomega display unit, three styles for different retail needs, but should show the products off nicely. If you have seen these already then forgive me for this, but I am just trying to do my part to keep the flow of info alive. Well, Fools.... as long as we're in this holding pattern waiting for Thursday's news... thought you might be interested in an update about the Zips Across America promotion now in progress.
The following are excerpts from mail I received this morning from Willow Baum, sr. mgr of consumer p.r. for Iomega:
<<....By the way, Zip-Across-America is going tremendously well. The Indianapolis school district contributed 25,000 letters alone. Plus, local media in each market -- at least 2 and often 3 network affiliates plus independent TV stations, daily newspapers and local radio -- are embracing this educational program. We expect their coverage to help encourage even more fourth through eighth graders to voice their issues of concern to the new Administration. In addition, city Mayors and even entertainers are lending their support at select stops. This week is Tampa; next Tuesday is New Orleans....>>>
Next stop New Orleans? hmm... I hear there's some really good Jaz there :-)
Jeanie 5+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Subj: Re:Sept IOMG vs INTL Sales Date: 96-10-14 21:34:29 EDT From: Hal Rubel
Question: The question was asked if a good September for Intel could mean a good September for IOMG.
Observation: Intel sells to manufacturers. Iomega sells to distributors/retailers. I imagine there is at least a 30 day delay between production and retail delivery / sale of computers using Intel's product.
Bearing this in mind, I would think Iomega will have a good October rather than having had a good September because the September Intel sales to manufacturers may be for an expected October retail sales increase.
As an Iomega sales barometer, I wonder how Intel did the month before in August?

..look, Kim Edwards has already stated that he doesn't consider Syquest a competitor..
..we also know that Swan Instruments will announce their 130MB drive at COMDEX..
..we've been led to believe that the Swan drive will be about 30% faster than the Zip, and of course, 30% larger..
..we can only guess what the news media and shorts would do with that sort of news..(if not answered)..
..those of us who have been around awhile remember MANY informative posts from an engineer who worked with the Zip drive media..(he was the first to realize that IOMG had only enabled a portion of the 'potential' of the Zip)..
..ok, from what I remember of his posts, and what we know is coming at COMDEX, here's MY opinion of what IOMG will announce at the show (hardware)..
..1) a 200MB Zip..it will be, you guessed it, 30% faster that the 100MB Zip..
..2) a 2 Gig Jaz..
..my wildest dreams has me wishing for some big solid state(flash) sort of memory card..
..huibs.. 7+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Subj: Re:What I have read Date: 96-10-14 22:44:13 EDT From: Spike021

<Spike021... thanks for sharing this, but could you tell us which magazine/issue date had this report?
Jeanie> Ok, it was about a week ago, and I think it was Computer Retail Weekly, I will see if the issue is still at the store and verify it, If it is CRW I can say that they have been very reliable in the past, also tonight at work I read a games magazine that did an article on the new storage options, I believe it was the Nov PCGames, will double check, but the article was about running games from a drive such as Zip or SyJet, the last line of the Zip review stated that with the growing size of games and save files a Zip drive or its equivalent would be a great addition to a gamers computer, also mentioned that Zip may become the new standard for built in drives, I realize this is just their opinion but it is nice to see the Zip being considered by a new group of users. Right on the heels of huibs talking about the swan drive I did a little homework as I received a packet of info from Swan. I have not had a chance to read it but so far it looks as though the drive will read floppies at 3x the rate of current drives, will be of course backwards compatible, will come in varying sizes all the way up to 720MB! Although it sounds too good to be true it might, could, possibly be true. Although Swan has yet to demonstrate a working model, I am betting much like huibs that they will make some sort of debut at comdex. Whether IO has a response to this has yet to be seen. As of right now Swan is Vaporware, but realistically IO could have its real first competition in about three weeks. I have faith that IO will debut something equally as huge, maybe a b/w compatible zip, or Superzip or something!!!(I hope)

I noticed that Ingram has a part number for a new Iomega product:
JAZ TRAVELLER EXT PAR ADAPTER ALLOWS JAZ TO CONNECT TO PC PPT
The real news is that SRP is $49.99 Currently its around $100 for one of those gadgets. Its due in end of Oct., beginning November. Wonder if its really the formerly Trantor, now Adaptec product... Mini SCSI Plus EPP.
-Dan (hey! didn't somebody pass on information about a phone survey and a parallel port Jaz? {:->) Bill does it again) 10++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Subj: Re:An actual new product Date: 96-10-15 01:30:51 EDT From: CayugaDan

I just realize the above might read like jibberish to some folks. This is how it was listed in Ingram.. I cut and paste it. Here's the translation..
Jaz Traveller external parallel adapter: This product allows Jaz to connect to parallel port.

Here in Akihabara Electronic District in Tokyo, where hundreds of computer stores flock, I did channel checks at about 15 stores. There are 5 brands of Zip drives sold here It gives customers impression that Zip is getting standard. By far the largest is Epson brand with approximately 70 % of Zip market share. Other brands seen are Maxell, Fuji Film, Iomega and Logitec. Epson Zip drive is sold at every store I visited, and some of the stores have Zip drives at the store front and at outside of the stores on the streets. I saw Iomega brand Zip only at one store, and most stores never heard of Iomega brand Zip drives. Iomega brand Zip cartridges and Jaz drives are quite popular. One of the biggest stores had as many Jaz drives as Zip drives, but some stores are having difficulty in getting Jaz.
The price of Zip drives range between 18,800 - 22,800 yen ($156 - $198) with Iomega Zip the most expensive and Logitec Zip the cheapest. None of the Zip drives come with cables since different PC models use different parallel cables, etc. Jaz drive sells for 67,200 - 74,800 yen ($584 for internal to $684 for external).
None of the stores I visited carried or have heard of PCs with build-in Zip drives. However, at Epson show room, I saw an Epson PC with a build-in SCSI Zip drive. (Note: Most Japanese PCs come with SCSI interface instead of IDE.) They said it's the first such model in Japan. The model is Epson Vividy VM516S. Epson also has a model with a built-in PD drive.
MO drives are more popular in Japan, but Zip is getting close. At least I did not see any Zip sales slowdown in Japan. Syquest was available only at one store. No LS-120s. I also heard Sharp is introducing their first desk-top PC with a build-in DVD drive early next year.
