Iomega was down $3/8 Wednesday, closing at $22 1/8 (-1.67%).

TODAY'S RECAP: Iomega shares gave up more ground Wednesday in a nasty trading session not only for IOM, but for the market as a whole. At one point in the frenzy, Iomega had dropped by a full 5%, but rallied back near the close of business to finish down just $3/8 per share.

The bad vibes carried over to our Iomega Folder, which was consumed with surliness and infighting Wednesday. Fortunately, we've managed to snatch a few bits of enlightened discussion from these flames. Although there are still a few scorched edges left in this report, some bona fide information has managed to make it through to us more or less unscathed.

Subj: Re:Rebates & Redemptions

Date: 96-12-11 10:40:42 EST

From: DGARRISON6

I've read with interest many of the posts concerning the $50 rebate offer for purchasing Iomega's Zip Drive and what percentage of people buying the Zip will actually redeem the rebate. The figure of only 50% seems reasonable to me. I say this because yesterday I finally bought a Zip (along with 3 extra Zip disks) at a local San Diego COMP USA. Their newspaper ad mentioned the rebate, and the "shelf-talker" also advertised the rebate. When I asked for the rebate coupon, I was told that rebate coupons for all products were at the front of the store. There must have had some 40 or 50 manufacturers' rebate coupons for various products (including IOM's Ditto), but after looking for several minutes, I couldn't find any for Zip. So I asked another cashier, who then gave me a reproduced copy of the Zip coupon. I don't know why they weren't out front with all the rest, but if I weren't persistent, I wouldn't have received the coupon, and therefore wouldn't have applied for the rebate.

Subj: Re:Sales and Supply 2

Date: 96-12-11 12:21:40 EST

From: MF ETurkey

MF Ben and PKeeler ask:

<<<My question is: Where is MATSUSHITA???>>>

I'll take a gentle stab at this: Engaging in ramp up and lining up OEMs for Q1 and Q2.

I would guess that we would see more SKUs added to the ones in existence after the ramp up is done and Matsushita can start supplying in quantity. I would likewise guess that those computer makers not yet on board, such as Dell (which started selling Zips from their catalogues many moons ago), and Apple (which had many Zips and Jazes hooked up to their computers at recent industry shows) would then know for certain that supply was not an issue.

Of course, for Apple the problem may have a lot more to do with their reorganizational efforts than anything else.

<<<VST ready to ship the PowerBook Zip. >>>>>

I don't know if they're ready to ship, but I can confirm that there are two SKUs in Ingram for this (one for 1400, the other for 2300, I believe). No stock. no due date.

Also, there is an SKU for Thinkpad. Again, no stock or due date.

Subj: Great News!!!

Date: 96-12-11 23:12:04 EST

From: Tyler43064

The December 17th issue of PC Magazine has issued their 13th annual awards for Technical Excellence.

The Iomega Jaz Drive received the "Finalist" award in the category of Peripheral Hardware. The winner in this category was a digital light processing (DLP) product developed by Texas Instruments. PC Magazine with the lead in by Michael J. Miller describes the awards as follows:

"Technical excellence is a very rare commodity. Many computer products are well thought out, solidly built, and bug free, but only a few demonstrate that spark of a real breakthrough. Technical excellence results from an imaginative process that goes beyond refining the existing categories to visualizing something new." The article goes on to say that the "10 winners and 19 finalists were selected for having made a unique and significant contribution to the PC industry."

A complimentary description of the Jaz drive and it's groundbreaking technology is included and is a good read well worth popping for the $3.99 cover price.

Congratulations Iomega!!!! You deserve it!!!

Sorry if this is repeating a previous post.

See ya

Tyler

Subj: Re:Cynicalguy

Date: 96-12-12 00:16:22 EST

From: CayugaDan

<<<After that it did degenerate and people adding their "go c-guy" posts are always to follow. In the fog of flaming the info was lost. VST LAPTOP ZIP SKUS AT INGRAM. Before MF Ben gets on my case...I'd like to say that Syjet SKUs have been available at Ingram for sometime. According to Peter12, SyQuest is still looking for someone to make disks for them, so having a SKU does not really mean you have a product about to roll-out.>>>>

PKeeler is correct that having an SKU does not necessarily mean that a product is ready to roll.

Its a good sign when an announced product gets its SKU. Typically, you can tell a product is not coming in immediately when there is no ETA (estimated time of arrival. probably) on the system. Typically when you see an ETA, its pretty close to correct. That will probably be true with this VST.

Of course, Syjet has had its ETA slip, and slip and slip. You may remember that I've reported ETAs for the Syjet a bunch of times (first was late this summer, I believe), only to see them slip as the day approached. I've given up checking since Comdex when it was confirmed it would be at least mid January before it ships.

As for the Rams: This is why I don't want to be dis-ing football players.

Ty Detmer (quarterback of Eagles) said regarding the upcoming Eagles-Jets game ``If you lose this game, you look like the biggest idiots in the world. If you win, it's no big deal. We have to win; we're expected to win.''

Hugh Douglas, the Jets leading pass rusher didn't like that. ``That's kind of a low blow,'' he said ``I'm ticked off about it personally. :"

``We've been struggling, and for him to say that is uncalled for. If I get my chance to get to him, I'll try to hurt him, flat out.''

Sounds like fun, eh Ty?

End Report. Posts covered through 3 am ET 12/12/96.
