7) Subj: Re: Zip inventory levels

<<I believe they are producing drives at their maximum rate and that the shortages are due to high demand at the OEM and retail levels. >>

You are entitled to believe this. Many also believed the earth was the center of the universe. I am Copernicus.... Just kidding :-).

<< I also believe that Iomega's inability to meet demand on its current product offerings is causing the delay in the introduction of ATAPI drives and is allowing for the redesign of the 12.7mm laptop Zip while MCI continues to ramp.>>

Again, you believe this but you really don't know. Other explanations are equally plausible and none involve conspiracy theories. I, for one, saw a Zip drive on the grassy knoll.

<>

It was not a good question. The 15mm Zip went back to engineer for a redesign -- it was too big to fit in several key modular-bay laptops. I don't believe Iomega is at full production at all. I wish it were true.

<<The Zip shortage is real, and it goes beyond the spot checks we see reported here when CayugaDan and Shig2 can tell us of the supply problems at the level of the wholesalers. I don't know of many companies that would ramp production for one of the hottest consumer products in history and then not make use of it.>>

Many companies ramp production for hot products and get roasted when they cool off. Is Zip cooling? I don't think so, but I sure don't believe retail+OEM demand is >2 million for this quarter. If it is, I'll be healthy, wealthy and wise come summer.

<<I will trust Occam's Razor and common sense on this one.>>

First, Occam's Razor has come into major question lately among scientific communities. Second, your conclusion that spot shortages = capacity maxed out is no more valid than my conclusion that spot shortages = current production maxed out or spot shortages = allocation/logistics problems.

Sincerely,

Occam Copernicus
"The Zip is at the center of the universe. Obviously!"
