Subject: Re: My Q3 '97 Take

From: SGOWLER

1. Zip is it.

Very concise. Perhaps a bit of an oversimplification, as I am very happy with the revenues from the Jaz carts; but true.

2. The only one that can kill Barnes.....

Ben, the point isn't really about taking Company X's 1% at this point. It is to preempt the competition from taking anymore of the other 90% at this point in time.

Thus, every battle is closely watched; every victory cheered. If the LS-120 can close the gap now, it can be assured of a better place in the competitive scheme of the future due to installed base. I want IOM to maintain its 9-1 lead, because it means more money for me.

As for the number of SKU's, and the importance attached to them; I feel that this is instructive as to the breadth of penetration. A base that is deep, wide, and diverse; strongly built for future growth. This is in contrast to the competition's "base".

Maybe the analysts don't see how strongly the foundation is being built... thats ok.

Very few people have that sort of gift.

3. Installed Base.....

2 Million Q? I'd be ecstatic, cheerleaders would pour from the stands and rip down the goalposts.

I'd also agree that OEM percentage needs to continue to rise.... parabolically would be nice, steadily would be OK.

4. ......Jaz

I think Jaz is going to surprise you. I feel that IDC includes a lot of old SyQuest stuff in this category, and a lot of those drives are being traded for Zips and Jaz'.

I think Cayuga has an idea of the Jaz to SyJet sales ratio, at least here in the US.

I'd be interested to hear his usual well measured opinion.

Thanks Ben,

steve

Subject: Re: Syquest/Ingram
Date: Mon, Oct 13, 1997 3:09 PM
From: HYPEMENOT

Yesterday I posted a message indicating that SyQuest's EZ Flyer and SyJet products occupied the three top spots (in the removable media storage category for the MAC) in the latest edition of Ingram Micro's "Best Seller" list.

After my initial post Bill Peterson raised a question that I attempted to answer as follows:

"While I left the last issue of CRN in my office, I am certain of the following - there are only three products listed under "removable storage" with the EzFlyer listed as #1 and the internal and external SyJets occupying the #2 and 3# positions. Further there is a column indicating the number of weeks each product has been on the "best seller" list. I am reasonably sure it was indicated that the EZ Flyer had been on the list for 20 weeks (which doesn't necessarily mean it was #1 for those 20 weeks), and that the indication for both the internal and external SyJets was that they each had been on the list for 8 weeks. There is also more than one storage category listed on the "Mac", but without the list, I can't tell you exactly what the wording of the "heading" is. But I can tell you, because I looked at it very carefully, that no Iomega product was listed on the Mac side under any of the categories (although it's possible that some third-party product(s) that incorporate the Zip or Jaz are on the Mac list)."

Now that I have the publication in front of me, I want to make one correction and add some additional information.

First, the correction. I was mistaken about the EZ Flyer having been on the list for 20 weeks. It has been on the list for 8 weeks, while the SyJet SCSI internal is the product that has been on the list for 20 weeks (the Syjet SCSI external, like the EZ Flyer 230, has been on for 8 weeks).

Also as to the time period covered by the list, Ingram indicates that the rankings are "based on units sold through Ingram Micro (U.S.) June 29, 1997 - July 26, 1997"

As I said yesterday, I do not see any Iomega products listed in any of the storage categories (there are three such categories) on the MAC side. However, as has regularly been reported here by Cynicalguy and others, the story is quite different on the PC side. There, under "Mass Storage" ZIP PP ext. is #1 (and has been on the list for 16 weeks), ZIP SCSI ext. is #2, (4 weeks), and JAZ SCSI ext. is #4 (4 weeks). Under "Tape Drives" the DITTO 2GB ext is listed as #3 (8 weeks) and the DITTO 3200 PP is #4 (4 weeks).

Subject: suggestions for KE
Date: Mon, Oct 13, 1997 7:10 PM
From: CayugaDan

I am looking forward to the conference call. I hope that KE is preparing for it.

This is what I would write KE if someone from IR asked me to write a note to KE about what I thought he needed to do in this call.

This is a pivotal time for IOM.

You need to talk about the Iomega vision.

You need to convince the financial community that iomega and its partners can and will ramp up to supply 40 million Zips.... AND that this what PC users, resellers, and manufacturers want. A new standard. A better computing environment. Talk production capacity, talk OEM penetration, talk about why its time to just standardize.

You need to hammer home that iomega is not a one trick pony. Point out the advances made in building R&D and point to how IOM has already cashed in on the spending.

Be sure to show them that iomega is rapidly becoming a smash hit not only in the US, but also globally. A new global powerhouse..

Loosen up a little, but don't lose your focus or your temper.

You will probably be grilled about Nomai. Defend what is ours, but listen to legal about what you can or can't or should or shouldn't say. Convey a sense of confidence, while sticking to what legal says.

Above all (speaking of legal) tell the truth. not just for legal reasons, but because your shareholders... the owners... need to know.. and deserve to.

Now you go get 'em KE.
