Friday, December 26, 1997 Wednesday, Iomega closed at $12 1/2, down $1/16 (-0.50%). TODAY'S RECAP: Iomega message board posters apparently enjoyed the holiday as the board was decidedly quiet on Christmas day. Prior to the festivities, however, folks felt inclined to discuss Consumer Reports latest analysis of what to buy in the personal computer market. Others talked about investment risk, license plates, Norton and the new Zip Rescue program and Iomega's current advertising campaign (or lack thereof). Subject: Consumer Reports Consumer Reports magazine was out this week with its recommendation on personal computers. The phrase "Iomega Zip drive" was sprinkled throughout the review. Anyone buying a new computer and read this review certainly got the idea that the Iomega Zip drive was an important part/option on computers. A little history (if my memory holds up): Two years ago the Consumer Reports computer review did not mention Iomega or Zip drive or even removable storage. Last year they mentioned it but also touted the LS-120 of all things. This year no drive but the Zip was named and almost no indication of other choices was even hinted at. Subject: Zip Rescue One of the funnier things I've run across while looking for SparQ owners, was some puddinghead who was all burnt over because Norton was pushing"Zip" Rescue instead of "Large capacity disk drive" Rescue. He wanted to be able to run the rescue program off of his EZ Flyer, SparQ, or some nonsense. Think about it. Imagine using unstable media in an unreliable product to "rescue" your hard drive...from the very piece of detrius that likely caused the crash in the first place. Sort of a vicious cycle that I am sure Symantec was reluctant to commit their flagship brandname to. Another funny story was the guy whose Zip ejected disks a little too vigorously... like across the room. Pull!!!!! A little skeet shooting anyone? Never lost any data though. 3+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Why should IOM increase advertising when they benefit from SYQT's spending? >> First, I agree (and have often written) that competitor's ads do help to expand the removable storage segment... the problem is that Iomega has to participate in order to benefit. I've only seen SYQT ads. Iomega cannot rely on word of mouth alone. Second, kill the enemy while they are small. If you let this SparQ thing take off, it can damage IOM in the long run. Just squash them with ads. By advertising, Iomega forces competitors to spend a lot of money just reach parity. This acts as a barrier to entry. Spend now, save later. The readers of this board already know about the Zip drive. Don't take that for granted. Consumers are more likely to purchase something they've seen on TV or in print than an unfamiliar product. Yesterday at the supermarket, I watched a friend shopping for honey... she switched 3 times before picking out what looked to me like plain old honey. I asked her what took her so long. She laughed and said that this was the only brand she had heard of. (I wanted the one that looked like a bear...) Once again, the readers of this board already know about the Zip drive. Don't take that for granted. There are a lot of people out there that have never heard of a Zip drive. If Iomega is positioning the Zip as a future floppy replacement, they got a lot of heads they need to get into. How? Advertise, advertise, advertise. 4+++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Subject: Re: VALUATION IOM/vs/MU/vs/COMS << Goldman may like MU more than IOM because (only one man's opinion) Goldman either has OR hopes to have an investment banking relationship with MU. IF you understand this business THEN you understand how the GAME is played. Other than that, as you states in your post RES IPSA LOQUITOR......that is the thing (the numbers) speak for themselves!!! >> This simply isn't the case (In this man's opinion). At least this isn't the ONLY explanation. If everyone in the investment community agreed that IOM was going to be a homerun (at least to the degree that some here do), the stock price would be much higher. As it is, there is a fair bit of uncertainty about the stock price. At least part of the issue here is IOM (the company)itself. First there is the prior history of the stock. Secondly, one would have to admit that the company isn't very forthcoming with regards to helping analysts, that they have made their share of blunders (I'm sure that the secondary offering at 35 followed by an immediate plummeting in the sahre price didn't make a lot of friends), and that they are essentially a one product company with high hopes to take over a big chunk of the digital film market. Then there are the issues of competition, lawsuits, etc. etc. All of this uncertainty adds up to a high-risk speculative tech stock that hasn't fallen anywhere near as much as some of the other tech stocks (MU and COMS for example). Of course, high risk can mean spectacular gain, just don't expect that people won't point out the risks, because, despite the talk here, the risks are certainly there and substantial. Oh and P.S. Subject: Re: IOM License plates Would have been nice if all us old IOM holders had sold out at 55...but we didn't. Haven't met anyone who did. I am not complaining as I have made a great deal of money on Iomega over the past 2.5 years. Which brings me to the next subject. I noticed a few messages recently that start with 'IOM license plates'. Don't see any info on it, but I have an alternative that gets great press around here in Sonoma, CA. I bought an Infiniti with some of my profits from IOM ( cash on the barrelhead no less). My license plate in part is "MIA". Neighbors are often asking me if I had a son who was missing in action. No, I say, it stands for MY IOMEGA ASSET. May you all have a merry Christmas and stuff yourself with turkey or ham. 6+++++++++++++++++++++++++++
