"Retire when you want."

Ah, yes. Sounds appealing, doesn't it?

But what do we mean by that? What we mean is this: Once you decide what you want, and once we, together, lay out exactly what it will take to get you there, you'll have the tools to reach your goal. In other words, you choose a destination, and then create the roadmap to get there. If you're going on a trip to a far-off place, it helps to have a map. It's really that simple. They key being that you need to start somewhere and we would like to congratulate you for taking the biggest step -- starting!

We'll even pick our retirement date today! How's that for starters?  So, let's get going and, in the spirit of true Foolishness, let's have some fun along the way.

The Road to "Someday"
The truth is that many of us have no idea what we want in retirement, or when it's going to happen (the ages of 59 or 62 or 65 are dimly in there bouncing around like ping-pong balls in a lottery drawing). We really don't want to think about what we might have to do to prepare for it, and today's needs or whims often take priority over something that seems light years away. But we're going to rub a crystal ball, and imagine the future. By knowing what to expect, we may better use today's resources to meet those future needs.

For some of you, retirement may seem an almost random event. What you'll learn in this seminar is that when and how you retire is anything but random.

Design Your Life
Retirement is, in this day and age, a fluid concept. It doesn't necessarily mean golf balls in Arizona. This is not your father's -- or, for that matter, your neighbor's or your cousin's -- retirement. Each of us is unique (including your father!) and deserves to choose where we want to be and how we want to live come retirement time.

Look at this seminar as an opportunity to design your own life.

Think about this for a moment. Which would you prefer -- to have forces beyond your control design how and where you live, or to design it yourself? Ah, we thought so. Self-reliance is fun and Foolish.

These are the destinations that you need to choose, and to put down on paper (or spreadsheet) as key points on your roadmap. To help you do this, we actually provide you with a workbook to keep all of your thoughts, decisions, and questions in one place. After you finish reading this lesson, we suggest you download and print your copy of your workbook and walk through each lesson with it in front of you.  (We'll show you where and how to download your workbook at the end of this lesson.)
