Dueling Fools Is Social Security Viable?

Social Insecurity? As we take on the last Duel of the 1900s, why not look ahead to see what the future of retirement holds for us all. Earlier this month, we launched an excellent Retirement area to explore the strategies and possibilities of tomorrow.

Today, we see if Social Security can see us through. Chris Rugaber (TMF RFK) thinks it will still be around while Robert Brokamp (TMF Bro) thinks our Golden Years may be tarnished.

The Bull...
I must be crazy to take the Bull position on this one. Everyone knows that Social Security probably won't last, and that you certainly can't count on it still being around by the time you retire. Almost everyone in the so-called "Generation X" and "Generation Y" age groups is especially cynical about the whole thing, or so we're told.

Call the doctor -- Social Security is sick, enfeebled, and ready for the nursing home. Who says? The secretary of the Treasury, the secretary of Labor, the secretary of Health and Human Services, and the commissioner of Social Security, that's who.
