Real generosity towards the future lies in giving all to the present. -- Albert Camus
If recent events in America and abroad have you thinking more about how you might help make the world a healthier and happier place, check out our Foolanthropy charity drive. And as the holiday season draws near, consider giving your loved ones not the usual sweaters or jewelry or books, but gifts in their name to charitable organizations doing important work.
The Motley Fool has held a Foolanthropy drive for just about every year of its short existence. Since 1997, we've raised nearly $2 million for our supported charities during our drives, with more than $1 million more donated by Fools between drives. We did all this together -- Fool community members and Fool staffers alike.
In the last two years, we invited you to nominate charities, and from that group we selected a handful to raise money for. However, this past year has in many ways been a bit extraordinary -- and difficult -- for the Fool as a company, for our country, for the economy and stock market, and perhaps for you, too. Our company resources are limited this year, and we're focusing more than ever on our business. Still, we do not want to let this annual opportunity to raise money for good causes pass us by. So this year we will run our campaign, as usual -- but we'll run it a little differently.
We hereby launch our 2001 Foolanthropy drive
We've decided this year to stick with the same five charitable organizations we selected last year from your nominations. Yes, partly because this will save time and resources, but also very much because we still love what these organizations do and how they do it. After our Foolanthropy Committee's research and discussions last year, we found these five organizations to be extremely amazing and impressive. We feel the same way today.
We invite you to read more about them and to consider donating at least a little money to one or more of them. We think you'll agree that each is unusual, fascinating and astonishingly effective at what it does.
Our drive will run from today through January 6th. Please join us and chip in!
Meet the charities
Spend two minutes reading about each of these nifty organizations and see if they don't knock your socks off.
Consider donating to them
The Fool takes no part of your donation. We invite you to donate directly to the charity or charities and not through us. You can do so in any of several ways:
(Note that if you donate by credit card within a week or so of the end of the year, your gift may possibly be processed in 2002 and may end up counting as a 2002 gift, for tax purposes. So plan ahead and perhaps donate early.)
Some special perspectives
Since the terrorist attacks of September 11th are still fresh on our minds, we asked each of the charities to let us know of any of their activities relate to terrorism, intercultural strife and understanding, or similar topics. Or about any work they do in related regions, such as New York City, Washington, D.C., rural Pennsylvania, Afghanistan, etc.
If you're interested, read the charities' responses. (You'll need to be a registered Fool to read this. Fear not, though -- registration is free, easy, and even offers you some perks.)
