Mercy Corps

Foolanthropy 2005

What's the best present you can give a family in need?

Every day, Mercy Corps provides critical, life-saving assistance for more than 7 million people in nearly 40 countries around the world. The organization exists to alleviate suffering, poverty, and oppression by helping people build secure, productive, and just communities.

Mercy CorpsMercy Corps is awed by human resilience in the face of great tragedy and challenge and believes in the ability of all people to thrive -- not just exist. Our philosophy is that communities recovering from disaster, conflict, or social upheaval must be the agents of their own transformation for change to endure. The organization's innovative, effective programs help families realize their goals and maintain their dignity by offering a hand up -- not a handout.

Over the past year, Mercy Corps has brought help and hope to millions of disaster-stricken families across the world. Beginning with the catastrophic Indian Ocean tsunami at the end of 2004, the past year has been one of unprecedented need -- and those needs continue. Right now, in addition to continuing rebuilding and development in Southeast Asia, Mercy Corps is responding to disasters and ongoing crises in Pakistan, Guatemala, Niger, Sudan, and the hurricane-battered American Gulf Coast.

In the last several months, in close partnership with the families we serve, Mercy Corps has:

  • Provided economic opportunities to thousands of people -- up to 23,000 local laborers per day -- through cash-for-work programs in tsunami-devastated Indonesia, India, and Sri Lanka.
  • Nourished more than 4,000 underfed children in famine-ravaged Niger by initiating feeding programs in tiny village health facilities.
  • Responded to the unique, pressing needs of more than 70,000 children displaced by Hurricane Katrina by distributing school supplies and re-equipping local classrooms.
  • Served the medical needs of nearly 1,000 Pakistani earthquake survivors every day, while also ensuring sufficient shelter, blankets, and household items as the harsh Himalayan winter sets in.

Mercy CorpsThroughout its 25-year history, Mercy Corps has worked in the midst of the world's most difficult situations to unleash the potential of people who can win against impossible odds. The agency is committed to positive, sustainable change around the world through emergency relief services, sustainable economic development, and civil society initiatives.

Mercy Corps is an organization with a track record you can trust. More than 92% of donations go directly to programs, and each dollar we receive helps us leverage well over $20 in food and other critical supplies. Charity Navigator, America's premier charity watchdog group, has consistently given Mercy Corps four stars -- its highest rating.

We invite you to stand with us and help the world's most vulnerable families fight back from the brink. Take a moment, restore hope, and be the change.
