Q. Can you list any books and websites I can turn to for further information on home buying?

A. Yes indeed! There are many websites where you can brief yourself on the home-buying process, find lenders or real estate agents, and locate other useful resources. Here are a few:

HomePriceCheck is a very nifty resource permitting you to look up the selling prices of homes in your target neighborhood (or in your own neighborhood, or any of your friends' or relatives' neighborhoods).

At the sites below, you can check out various towns and regions, as well as their crime rates, quality of life, etc.:

If you're not online, several national magazines, such as Money, regularly offer surveys of the best places to live in the country. Regional magazines frequently provide similar information (focusing on their region, of course).

Another good bet is to look up an area's local Chamber of Commerce, which will often be willing to send you information on the services and characteristics of their city or town:
