When it comes to size, few companies can compete with the 10 biggest banks in America. These institutions are massive, with the four largest banks each having approximately $2 trillion worth of assets on their balance sheets.

The list of the top 10 biggest banks in America is headlined by JPMorgan Chase (JPM -0.40%), the fabled New York City-based bank which sits securely atop the industry. It's followed by Bank of America (BAC 1.59%), Wells Fargo (WFC 1.36%), and Citigroup (C 2.02%), respectively.

Beyond these global systemically important banks are a collection of regional lenders. These are huge in their own right, the largest of which, U.S. Bancorp (USB -3.61%), has $439 billion worth of assets on its balance sheet. Despite this, as you can see in the following slideshow, these regional banks nevertheless pale in comparison to their too-big-to-fail peers when it comes to size.
