Impinj CEO Chris Diorio summed up both the fourth quarter and 2016:

The fourth quarter was a strong close to a landmark and transformational year for Impinj. During the year, our continued execution of our strategy and the dedication of the entire Impinj team resulted in 43% revenue growth, approximately 70% endpoint IC volume growth and improved margin. We raised a total of approximately $107 million in net proceeds in two successful equity offerings, expanding our available capital to continue investing in the massive market opportunity and enhance our leading market position.

CFO Evan Fein said during the conference call that the company is on its way to hitting its long-term targets:

We remain on track to reach our target model in 2019 to 2020 with endpoint IC revenue greater than 60% of our total, connectivity greater than 30% and approximately 5% from software. We also target gross margins to be in the range of 57% to 60% and adjusted EBITDA to be in the range of 12% to 16%. As a reminder, we expect to maintain EBITDA margin in the low single digits in 2017 and anticipate some leverage in the model in 2018.

Looking forward

Impinj's first-quarter guidance represents year-over-year revenue growth of about 42% at the midpoint, a slowdown compared to the fourth quarter. Seasonality is a factor, according to the company, and it expects this effect will diminish as it continues to grow.

Earnings guidance calling for a non-GAAP loss at the midpoint suggests that costs are going to continue to rise faster than revenue. That was true during the fourth quarter, with operating expenses rising 56.7%, but revenue growth was enough to drive earnings higher.

Impinj is still a small company in the early innings of driving adoption of its radio frequency technology. The company expects endpoint IC volume to reach 7.8 billion to 8 billion units in 2017, a 32% increase compared to 2016.
