Wells Fargo to Give $1 Million to Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts

Wells Fargo ATMs also to accept donations for American Red Cross; Bank’s mobile deposit services to be expanded in impacted areas

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE: WFC  ) said today the company will donate $1 million for relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. A portion of the funds, $250,000, will go to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund to support relief efforts the agency is directing throughout impacted areas in the region. The remaining $750,000 will go to support nonprofits conducting grassroots relief and recovery efforts in affected areas.

In addition, most of Wells Fargo’s more than 12,000 ATMs in the U.S. will be able to accept donations for American Red Cross relief efforts. The company also is expanding its Wells Fargo Mobile®deposit services in the impacted areas.

“The coming days and weeks are going to be difficult for those impacted by this devastating, historic storm and Wells Fargo wants to help,” said Michelle Lee, Northeast regional president, Community Banking. “Our donation to the American Red Cross will help immediate relief efforts while our donations to local non-profits will support longer-term efforts that will be needed in storm-hit communities and neighborhoods. Concerned Wells Fargo team members and customers also want to help, and they will be able to do so by making direct donations to the Red Cross at most of our ATMs.”

American Red Cross donations at Wells Fargo ATMs

From October 31 through November 13, Wells Fargo customers can donate to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund at Wells Fargo ATMs across the U.S. (with the exception of Kansas, Missouri, and Washington, D.C., due to local restrictions). Customers will not be charged a fee for using this service and 100 percent of the donations will be sent to the American Red Cross.

Mobile deposit services expanded to customers in impacted states

To further aid customers impacted by the hurricane, Wells Fargo is expanding Wells Fargo Mobile deposit service beyond New York, Connecticut and Virginia to include customers in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Washington D.C. Using this service, customers can deposit most checks directly into their eligible Wells Fargo checking or savings account using the Wells Fargo Mobile App supported on Apple and Android devices.

Fees waived for Wells Fargo customers

Additionally, Wells Fargo previously announced that in response to Hurricane Sandy’s impact it is waiving or crediting certain fees beginning Monday, Oct. 29 through Thursday, Nov. 1 in markets directly affected by the storm. Wells Fargo is waiving late fees on credit cards, certain small business and consumer loans, including home-equity, auto and student loans. It is also waiving the fee it normally charges its customers when they use another bank’s ATMs. This applies to customers in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Delaware.

Wells Fargo Home Mortgage customers affected by Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Delaware with existing home mortgages should call to inquire about payment options available to eligible customers and for guidance on handling property insurance loss claims.
