Rao Hired to Manage Janus Forty Fund
Pinto to Manage Janus Twenty Fund
Coleman Appointed Manager of Small- and Mid-Cap Strategies
DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Janus Capital Group Inc. (NYSE: JNS ) announced the appointment of Doug Rao, 39, as Portfolio Manager of Janus Forty Fund and Aspen Forty Portfolio, replacing Ron Sachs, CFA, who has decided to leave the firm, effective May 31, 2013.
Rao, who has 17 years of investment management experience, was employed for seven years by Marsico Capital Management as Partner and Portfolio Manager of the Marsico Flexible Capital Fund, Co-Portfolio Manager of both the Marsico Focus Fund and the Marsico Growth Fund, and earlier as a Senior Equity Analyst covering global financial services. During his tenure on Marsico Flexible Capital Fund from July 2, 2007 until July 19, 2012, the fund earned an annualized return of 10.3% versus 0.8% for the average large-cap growth fund, according to Morningstar. Prior to Marsico, Rao was a Senior Equity Analyst at TCW. Rao joins Janus from Chautauqua Capital Management, where he was a Partner and Equity Portfolio Manager. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia and an M.B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles.
Effective May 13, 2013, Marc Pinto, CFA, a 19-year veteran of Janus’ large-cap growth equity investment team, has been named Portfolio Manager of Janus Twenty Fund, replacing Sachs. Janus Twenty Fund is closed to new investors. Pinto will maintain his role as Co-Portfolio Manager of Janus Balanced Fund and Portfolio Manager of Janus Growth and Income Fund. As of March 31, 2013, the Janus Balanced Fund is rated 5-stars by Morningstar and is in the 36th, 5th and 10th percentiles in the balanced fund category for the 1-, 5- and 10-year periods, respectively, as measured by Morningstar.
“Doug and Marc bring great track records and experience to Janus Forty Fund and Janus Twenty Fund, respectively,” said Richard M. Weil, Chief Executive Officer of Janus Capital Group. “They are excellent choices to drive strong performance in these two flagship strategies on behalf of our clients.”
Effective May 13, 2013, Jonathan Coleman, CFA, has been appointed Portfolio Manager of Janus Triton Fund. Additionally, Coleman and Equity Research Analyst Maneesh Modi have been named Co-Portfolio Managers of Janus Venture Fund. Coleman and Modi replace Chad Meade and Brian Schaub, who are leaving the firm; they will work with Coleman and Modi in the coming weeks to transition the portfolios.
Coleman has extensive experience with both the small- and mid-cap asset classes. He joined Janus as a Small-Cap Analyst in 1994 and Co-Managed Janus Venture Fund and related small-cap strategies from February 1997 until December 2000. Additionally, he managed Janus Enterprise Fund, which invests in small- and mid-cap stocks, from February 2002 to October 2007. During Coleman’s tenure on the two funds, he delivered strong performance. Importantly, Coleman hired both Meade and Schaub and mentored them with a shared investment philosophy focusing on high-quality growth opportunities.
“Jonathan brings proven excellence to the task of managing small- and mid-cap stocks having delivered very strong results for our clients in these asset classes in the past,” Weil said. “We appreciate Ron, Brian and Chad’s contributions and wish them well.”
Modi has been with Janus since May 2008 as an Analyst focused on small- and mid-cap stocks, primarily in the financial services and industrial sectors. Previously, he was a Senior Research Analyst at Wasatch Advisors.
In connection with these changes, Coleman has relinquished his role as Co-Portfolio Manager of the Janus Fund and Aspen Janus Portfolio to his Co-Portfolio Manager Barney Wilson, who is sole manager and maintains his position as Assistant Director of Research. Wilson, who has 16 years of investment experience, joined Janus as an Equity Research Analyst in January 2005 and has served as Co-Portfolio Manager of the Janus Fund and Aspen Janus Portfolio since May 2011. He served as the Portfolio Manager of the Janus Global Technology Fund from February 2006 to May 2011.
