Eli Lilly: Warming Up or Cooling Off?

As Warren Buffett proved, buying and holding is the key to great investing. But how do you know you're not holding on to a loser? Aside from glancing at an earnings release, the only information many investors get about a stock comes from its price. It's tough to separate good companies from bad ones on such scant evidence -- but it's vitally important. Finding well-run companies at bargain-basement prices is a great way to accumulate a fortune over the long run.

With that in mind, we Fools have whipped up an easy tool to help you see how your company is doing. We can harness the aggregate intelligence of the 135,000-plus investors participating in Motley Fool CAPS to see what the community is thinking about a company today, and how they felt about it last quarter. A change in the community's approval (signified by four- and five-star ratings) or disapproval (one- and two-star ratings) could indicate that further research is in order.

Here are the CAPS community's aggregate feelings on Eli Lilly & Co. (NYSE: LLY), and opinions on some related companies, from today and last quarter.

I absolutely cannot believe SNTS only has a 3 star CAPS rating. This is a real company, 300-400 employees in a really nice buiding in San Diego's business park. They have real products and currently have sales around $35M quarterly, profitable for some time. Current market cap is only $190M - small since there's $140m in annual sales. Their main drug is an alternative to Prilosec for acid reflux and other gastric problems. Their combination adds sodium bicarbonate for immediate relief, it's sold under the Zegerid brand name. They also have two FDA dates coming up in December, the 4th and 9th that have blockbuster potential. The first is their own for a new formulation prescription tablet to add to the arsenal, the second is an over-the-counter version through partner Schering-Plough. Both are BIG for the company, the partnered OTC version will give a $20M milestone payment and double-digit royalties. All is amazingly quiet on the net around Santarus and the company is currently undervalued. I feel the stock is worth $9, it's currently trading around $3.10. Their Q4 results will be announced Wednesday, expected to be break-even, a profit could send it shooting a bit.
