Southern Copper: Warming Up or Cooling Off?

As Warren Buffett proved, buying and holding is the key to great investing. But how do you know you're not holding on to a loser? Aside from glancing at an earnings release, the only information many investors get about a stock comes from its price. It's tough to separate good companies from bad ones on such scant evidence -- but it's vitally important. Finding well-run companies at bargain-basement prices is a great way to accumulate a fortune over the long run.

With that in mind, we Fools have whipped up an easy tool to help you see how your company is doing. We can harness the aggregate intelligence of the 140,000-plus investors participating in Motley Fool CAPS to see what the community is thinking about a company today, and how they felt about it last quarter. A change in the community's approval (signified by four- and five-star ratings) or disapproval (one- and two-star ratings) could indicate that further research is in order.

Here are the CAPS community's aggregate feelings on Southern Copper Corp (USA) (NYSE: PCU), and opinions on some related companies, from today and last quarter.

Where PCU's price goes from here depends on the direction of the dollar and PCU's earnings. If the dollar continues to fall then PCU's price will rise in the short term. But the if the dollar increases or remains the same and PCU's earnings don't increase to match their price (they should probably increase their dividend as well) the the price will probably fall back into the 20s. All indicators point to PCU being overvalued at their current price. But I still like PCU as a good long term play.

If all you are looking for is capital gains, I say it will rise, maybe only short term..

I am looking at dividends, they look better all the time. I expect with the China factor the dividends will rise also

Dollar-cost averaging: Dollar-cost averaging is the discipline of regularly buying shares of stock. An investor using this long-term technique would invest a set amount every month, as opposed to saving it up and investing it in one lump sum.
