Last week, I journeyed from Alexandria, Va., to lower Manhattan to check out the Occupy Wall Street protest rally firsthand. I returned home thinking that the protest was more complex than what I'd seen and read going in, and also that a consistent set of demands was impossible to ascertain. Even though they shared the same discontent, few protestors shared a consistent vision or set of demands.

What they did have in common was a protest staple: signage. Posters were everywhere, ranging from the short and sweet ("End tax loopholes") to the nonsensical ("Dow Jones ate my doughnut").

Armed with a digital camera, my colleague Mac Greer and I photographed a bunch of the protest signs. Here are five that stood out for being informative, insightful, or mischievously funny. (Note: Including them here does not mean I endorse the messages in each.)
