Are You Missing Something Easy at Vale?

Margins matter. The more Vale (NYSE: VALE  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, comparisons to sector peers and competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Vale's competitive position could be.

Here's the current margin snapshot for Vale and some of its sector and industry peers and direct competitors.

Unfortunately, that table doesn't tell us much about where Vale S.A. has been, or where it's going. A company with rising gross and operating margins often fuels its growth by increasing demand for its products. If it sells more units while keeping costs in check, its profitability increases. Conversely, a company with gross margins that inch downward over time is often losing out to competition, and possibly engaging in a race to the bottom on prices. If it can't make up for this problem by cutting costs -- and most companies can't -- then both the business and its shares face a decidedly bleak outlook.

Of course, over the short term, the kind of economic shocks we recently experienced can drastically affect a company's profitability. That's why I like to look at five fiscal years' worth of margins, along with the results for the trailing 12 months, the last fiscal year, and last fiscal quarter. You can't always reach a hard conclusion about your company's health, but you can better understand what to expect, and what to watch.

Here's the margin picture for Vale over the past few years.

Because of seasonality in some businesses, the numbers for the last period on the right -- the TTM figures -- aren't always comparable to the FY results preceding them. To compare quarterly margins to their prior-year levels, consult this chart.

Here's how the stats break down:

  • Over the past five years, gross margin peaked at 59.4% and averaged 52.9%. Operating margin peaked at 49.1% and averaged 41.1%. Net margin peaked at 36.1% and averaged 29.6%.
  • TTM gross margin is 61.1%, 820 basis points better than the five-year average. TTM operating margin is 50.9%, 980 basis points better than the five-year average. TTM net margin is 39.1%, 950 basis points better than the five-year average.

With recent TTM operating margins exceeding historical averages, Vale looks like it is doing fine.

The Steve Jobs Betrayal
You may already know that in the final year of his life, Jobs revealed a stunning betrayal — and told his biographer, "I will spend my last dying breath... and every penny of Apple's $40 billion in the bank to right this wrong." Ok, I see these types of comments all over the place bashing MF writers and in these writer's defense...

The writers here are analysts and most of them from what I see are offering their analysis or "appraisal" of the sector or companies that they research, follow, and study based on real data and market observations; FOR FREE non-the-less. This is their job. It is what they are hired to do as market analysts and writers for MF. If you don't like what you read, or don't agree with it, take it with a grain of salt and read something else, like (insert mega media news channel here). Not to mention that trying to keep tabs on everything that happens with the market and the forces that affect it is a daunting task to say the least.

It states pretty clearly at the top of every page, under the logo "to educate, amuse, and enrich"... kind of looks like a mission statement to me and those five words sum up the very reason why I like to come here and read well thought out analyses like above.

Disclaimer - I am in no way presently, or anticipated in the future, affiliated with MF and have no interest, personal, business, or otherwise with the organization or members thereof nor have I been in the past (although I do enjoy educating myself, amusing myself, and enriching my overall investing experience with my visits to the MF website) nor do I own any public shares or any other stake in the companies discussed on this page.

I just had to get that out... I feel better now. Keep up the good work Seth, and all the other MF writers. You all do a stellar job.
