Why EMC Continues Leading the Growing Storage Market

The following video is part of our "Motley Fool Conversations" series, in which Eric Bleeker, senior technology analyst, and Brandon Ragan, systems engineer, discuss topics around the investing world.

In today's edition, Eric talks to Brandon to get a better feel for how the Fool is handling its growing storage needs. The company recently went with EMC when upgrading its storage area network, which Brandon explains was a function of ease of maintenance and interoperability with Cisco and VMware.

EMC, Cisco, and VMware are just riding the revolution. The Motley Fool has a just released free report on mobile named "The Next Trillion Dollar Revolution" that details a "hidden" component play inside mobile phones that's also absolutely dominating the exploding tech market in China. Inside the report we not only describe why the mobile revolution will dwarf any other technology revolution seen before it, but we also name the company at the forefront of the trend. Hundreds of thousands have requested access to previous reports, but you can be among the first to access this just-released report by clicking here -- it's free.

The Steve Jobs Betrayal
You may already know that in the final year of his life, Jobs revealed a stunning betrayal — and told his biographer, "I will spend my last dying breath... and every penny of Apple's $40 billion in the bank to right this wrong." What was it that made Jobs so irate — and why could it make a few in-the-know investors some major profits over the coming months and years?

Enter your email address below to find out what made Jobs so enraged!

With all due respect to your Systems Engineer, EMC's "Unified Storage" platform is a knock-off of the story NetApp has been telling for years. EMC cobbled together its disparate storage systems into the VNX line, in an attempt to provide a response to the true unified storage platform of NetApp Data ONTAP. NetApp offers both NAS and block storage on all of its storage platforms; from its entry-level systems to its high-end platforms. By relegating NetApp storage to the role of a NAS platform, fool.com did not make full use of NetApp technology. What was actually being said in this interview, in my opinion, is that fool.com admins' were familiar with EMC storage and decided to standardize on it because it was more familiar to them. In reality, EMC's technology is not better. It is not cheaper. That's why NetApp continues to take market share from EMC; particularly in thr virtualization space. I'm sure the EMC sales rep dropped his pants in exchange for this video and the bragging rights to say that they ripped out NetApp storage. Next time, please tell the complete story.

storagedork please tell your complete story as well. If I were to run at block based benchmark test on a fas6280 and compare the results to that of a similarly configured vnx7500, which would you select? NetApp's strength is NAS and EMC's VNX is Block and File without a performance compromise on the high end. In my opinion, the choice was simple. It's also the reason NetApp purchased LSI's Engenio External Storage Systems Business.
