The following video is part of our "Motley Fool Conversations" series, in which consumer-goods editor and analyst Austin Smith and industrials editor/analyst Brendan Byrnes discuss topics around the investing world.

In today's edition Brendan and Austin discuss three of the market's most hated stocks, SUPERVALU (NYSE: SVU), Sears Holdings (Naadaq: SHLD), and GameStop (NYSE: GME). Looking at these companies, Brendan and Austin have mixed feelings about the large short interest against them. Austin understands the Sears short position but wouldn't be willing to put his own money behind it, while he completely disagrees with the SUPERVALU short case. Both Brendan and Austin believe that GameStop is a justified short.

Shorting stocks can be exciting and profitable, but it's also dangerous. Rather than try to catch a falling knife, I suggest you pick up a great growth story for the long run. You can uncover a great one in our report: "The Motley Fool's Top Stock for 2012." We've created a special free report for investors to uncover this soon-to-be rock star.
