The following video is part of our "Talking Stocks" series, in which Motley Fool analyst Austin Smith discusses trends across the investing universe.

In today's edition, Austin discusses the three top-performing stocks on the Dow Jones Industrials Average this week. Disney ran away with the gold medal on a 6.1% jump for the week. It's no surprise why, as The Avengers smashed box-office records with the ease of Thor's hammer. Tied for second and third are Verizon and AT&T, both with 2.2% gains. Given that there isn't a whole lot of meaningful news about either of these two stocks, Austin thinks their performance is the result of a flight to the safety of their massive dividends.

At the end of the day, though, most of this activity falls under the "disregard as market noise" category. Instead, we suggest you tune out the stress of the day-to-day market and opt for great individual stocks for the long term, like The Motley Fool's Top Stock for 2012. It's our chief investment officer's top pick for the year, and it may be yours, too, when you read more about it.
