Google’s Nikesh Arora spoke at an investor conference the other day, and outlined why Google is such a great business. The first topic addressed was monetizing mobile. This is a big topic. Arora sees mobile search as "intent and transact" versus the desktop, which is more about research. Firms that learn more about the use cases should do better, like TripAdvisor has started to do. He also spoke about the Motorola acquisition. Google bought Motorola in order to make sure that it had a foothold in the ever-changing device business. One other topic, discussed by Arora, caught John and David’s eye. YouTube continues to make great strides and, over time, could change the advertising dynamics of television the way Pandora is trying to change it in radio. It may look as though Google is taking a shotgun approach, but that’s not the case at all. It remains focused on improving the user experience in everything it touches. And that’s great for its business over the long term.
