Walt Disney (NYSE:DIS) has unveiled a redesigned website meant to be a "magical online entertainment destination for the next generation of Guests." The new Disney.com was "designed to be a clean, elegant and easy-to-navigate experience, unifying Disney content from across the company," according to a company blog post.
Interactive Media, the umbrella division of the company that covers the company's web assets in addition to other digital properties, is the worst-performing of the company's five divisions. It's reported 15 consecutive quarterly losses, the most recent being a $42 million operating shortfall for 3Q 2012. It was the only unprofitable business unit for Disney in that time frame, as well as for fiscal year 2011.
The company has long struggled to succeed in the digital sphere. It was forced to write off several million dollars of its investment in the Go.com portal it acquired in the late 1990s when it closed the site in 2001. More recently, Disney has enacted a series of layoffs at Interactive, where around 50 employees were let go this past September.
