Media measurement company Rentrak has released its weekly box-office ticket sales ranking for the past weekend, and comedy film Identity Thief took home the top spot worldwide with sales of $36.8 million.
Distributed by Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA ) subsidiary Universal, Identity Thief won big domestically on its debut weekend, beating out its nearest competitor, Lionsgate's (NYSE: LGF ) Warm Bodies, by $25 million in domestic sales. Bodies ranked fourth worldwide with sales of $16 million across the globe, bringing its cumulative total to over $45 million.
Western film Django Unchained, distributed internationally by Sony (NYSE: SNE ) , pulled in a solid second worldwide after leading the box office last week. The film recorded nearly $21 million in sales, bringing its theatrical run to more than $341 million worldwide. Django maintained its number-one spot internationally over the weekend, recording more than $18 million outside the U.S.
