American Express (AXP 2.56%) is touting a "new social commerce experience" that lets cardholders utilize tweeting to buy things.

The company announced in a press release Monday that cardholders can now tweet special hashtags to purchase products from select companies. The service uses American Express' Card Sync technology, first released on Twitter last March. Here's how it works: You have to "sync" your card first. Then go to the @AmericanExpress Twitter page for details on what's available. Then tweet a special product hashtag for the product you want to buy with your synced card. Amex will send you a confirmation on Twitter. Tweet the confirmation hashtag within 15 minutes and your product will be on its way.

Company Senior Vice President of Digital Partnerships and Development Leslie Bernard commented on the power of social media in the release, saying, "Based on the initial success of Amex Sync for offers, we know there is significant power in combining our assets with Twitter's platform to bring value to Cardmembers and merchants... Now, we're leveraging our unique technology and closed-loop network to introduce a seamless solution that redefines what's possible in the world of social commerce."
