TripAdvisor Beats on Both Top and Bottom Lines

TripAdvisor (Nasdaq: TRIP  ) reported earnings on Feb. 13. Here are the numbers you need to know.

For the quarter ended Dec. 31 (Q4), TripAdvisor beat slightly on revenues and beat expectations on earnings per share.

Compared to the prior-year quarter, revenue expanded significantly and GAAP earnings per share grew significantly.

TripAdvisor booked revenue of $169.4 million. The 19 analysts polled by S&P Capital IQ hoped for a top line of $167.3 million on the same basis. GAAP reported sales were 23% higher than the prior-year quarter's $137.8 million.

EPS came in at $0.29. The 21 earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ predicted $0.27 per share. GAAP EPS of $0.23 for Q4 were 44% higher than the prior-year quarter's $0.16 per share.

Margin details
For the quarter, gross margin was 97.9%, 20 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 27.7%, 70 basis points better than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was 19.8%, 380 basis points better than the prior-year quarter.

Looking ahead
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $221.5 million. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $0.46.

Next year's average estimate for revenue is $935.4 million. The average EPS estimate is $1.77.
