Galaxy S4 Gala! Samsung Raises the Bar for Smartphones

Samsung launched its much-anticipated Galaxy S4 last night -- and fired a few shots across Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) bow in the process. Regardless of how you feel about the new features, Samsung has raised the bar for smartphones.

True to tradition, the new Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL  ) Android-based phone is once again larger than its predecessor, with the screen size bumping up from 4.8 inches to 5 inches. Hardware, however, is hardly the whole story. Our Rex Moore was in New York last night for the big event, and tells us in the this video that the Galaxy S4 really separates itself from competitors with its software features.

LMAO... it's plastic?! As MDN rightly notes: "Pouring cheap plastic into molds, popping out the lumps, installing someone else’s OS layered with a patent infringing UI, and quickly dumping the results onto store shelves does not equal innovation."

Why do these sorts of articles always bring up Apple as a comparison? IPhones are no longer on the cutting edge. HTC, Samsung and even Blackberry have superior phones at the moment. The jury is still out on Nokia with their Lumia.

I am in Asia at the moment, and nobody wants an iPhone - they are all clamoring for Samsung Galaxies. It has to be said that Samsung is advertising hard in this huge region but Apple is nowhere in sight. Europe is similar.

As an Apple shareholder, I hope Apple steps up their game significantly. Right now they are trailing most other vendors. Esoterics like metal edges don't make a difference in a marketplace that changes devices every two years and only wants the coolest technology.

Just got my Z10 and loving it. Very smooth interface and very handy device. Don't know if it's more innovative, but it is a pleasure to use.
