With the release of Facebook's new meta app, Apple faces a threat from an unexpected challenger.

While one of Apple's (AAPL 1.27%) best-known advantages is its simplicity of use, a recent announcement by Facebook (META -0.52%) may represent the most significant challenges Cupertino has ever seen. In CEO Mark Zuckerberg's words, the development allows users to make their smartphones a highly personal experience. "We love Apple," Zuckerberg said, but that is not impeding his company's efforts to shake up the industry.
