HMA is looking for a new CEO. On Tuesday, hospital operator Health Management Associates (NYSE: HMA) announced that President and Chief Executive Officer Gary D. Newsome intends to retire from the company on July 31, in order to do missionary work for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as president of the church's Uruguay-Montevideo Mission in South America.

In a statement, Newsome called his new appointment "a rare privilege to serve in Uruguay, a place that has remained in my heart since I served my first mission there more than 35 years ago." He has been leading HMA for five years.

Board of Directors Chairman William Schoen was quoted as saying: " We respect his commitment to his faith and wish him well in his future endeavors." The company says it has begun the work of searching for a new CEO. A recent CBS 60 Minutes report criticized the company's patient admissions policies.
