Right now there's no bigger story in retail than Black Friday, the official beginning of the Christmas shopping season. But this year several retailers tried to jump-start sales by opening their doors earlier than ever; Macy's (M -1.52%), J.C. Penney (JCPN.Q), and Kohl's all opened at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving, while Wal-Mart (WMT 1.32%) opened at 6 p.m. But will these early openings be enough to boost these companies' bottom lines?
