Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ) doesn't have the best track record in the smartphone market. Quite the contrary, Hewlett-Packard has tried and failed numerous times before. That's not stopping it from taking another swing with a pair of new Android devices targeting the Indian market. The Slate6 VoiceTab and Slate7 VoiceTab are coming in on the larger end of the market, boasting 6-inch and 7-inch displays, respectively.

The company knows better than to compete directly with Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Samsung (NASDAQOTH:SSNLF) in the hyper-competitive U.S. market, which is probably a good thing. The Indian market is predominantly prepaid, which lessens the power that wireless carriers wield over manufacturers. That's good news for any entrant trying to crack the market. Still, it won't be easy, as low-cost local vendors like Micromax will be playing defense.

In this segment of Tech Teardown, Erin Kennedy discusses HP's newest smartphones with Evan Niu, CFA, our tech and telecom bureau chief.
