Change is in the wind at Microsoft (MSFT -4.10%), and a coming move with Apple (AAPL -0.32%) should help the world's largest software company maintain its recent momentum.

More broadly, newly minted CEO Satya Nadella initiated a number of moves that appear aimed at establishing a sustainable future for Microsoft in the mobile era. In order to attack this major challenge, Nadella started his tenure by reshuffling Microsoft's management ranks in order better prepare for its eventual push deeper into mobile services.

And in that vein, Microsoft's newly minted chief executive is expected to announce that Microsoft's Office suite of productivity software will finally be fully released on Apple's iPad as early as next week.

Historically, Microsoft made every effort to avoid releasing a fully functional version of Office for Apple's uber popular tablet because of the potential negative impact it could have on sales of Windows-based tablets. However, as Apple and Google continue to expand their shipments and develop their own productivity tools, Microsoft needed to establish a presence on tablets like Apple's iPad -- and fast.
