By any measure, Universal Display Corporation's (OLED 0.01%) phosphorescent OLED technology is truly remarkable.

To be sure, by incorporating Universal Display's OLED materials in their devices, electronics manufacturers including Samsung (NASDAQOTH: SSNLF) Display and LG Display (LPL 0.80%) have already built millions of vibrant smartphones and tablets to market. What's more, Universal Display should benefit as the prices for curved OLED televisions continue to rapidly fall, and truly flexible, virtually indestructible plastic OLED displays are already on the horizon.

But according to the Fool's Steve Symington in the following video, a recent patent filing from Samsung reminded the market of yet another key design benefit of Universal Display's flagship technology: namely, that OLED displays can also be made to be transparent.
