The Department of Defense awarded just six defense contracts Wednesday, worth $113.1 million combined. Only two publicly traded firms landed contracts.

First, Lockheed Martin (LMT 0.01%) was awarded a $54.6 million contract modification to provide non-recurring technical assistance on Lot VII F-35 production efforts for the U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, and for international partner governments planning to purchase the aircraft. Lockheed Martin will be supplying manufacturing technology transfer and conducting planning tasks necessary to ensure buyers have a manufacturing base with sufficient technical knowledge to support F-35 production requirements. Work under this contract is expected to continue through next January.

And second, Rockwell Collins (COL) was awarded a contract modification worth up to $10.3 million to pay for the supply of various items in support of the Joint Helmet-Mounted Cueing System, or JHMCS. Rockwell Collins describes JHMCS as a modular helmet display that can provide a pilot with day or night displays on his helmet visor, "providing the pilot full situational awareness throughout the canopy." According to the company, more than 4,000 JHMCS systems have been supplied to the U.S. Air Force and Navy already, as well as to the air forces of 22 other countries. Delivery of the various items covered by this contract modification should take place by Sept. 30, 2015.
