The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI 0.67%) has been on a tear for a year and a half, and a big part of the driver is an energy boom in the U.S., which is lifting the whole economy. 

But that boom in energy hasn't translated to great results for ExxonMobil (XOM 0.57%) and Chevron (CVX 1.20%), the two direct energy plays on the Dow. They've struggled with slow growth internationally, more expensive exploration, and even the increasing competitiveness of alternative energy.
