We're excited about our CAPS blogs, because they're a great way for our community to talk about investing in a thoughtful, considered way.

What's this blogging I hear about?
Blogs are ways for individuals to publish their writing online without having to worry about things like getting their very own webpage.

You can think of them as akin to newspaper columns -- they tend to be:

  • Written by one person
  • A series of short articles
  • Opinion pieces with backup

People who like what you have to say can return to the same place again and again to hear more.

What should I blog about?
Anything to do with the wide world of investment! We want to hear your views about the market, about the economy, about a specific company, about a trend, about an industry, about a news item, or about an investment strategy.

In other words, tell us what you think and why.

How do I start a blog?
Every CAPS player can blog right from the CAPS system.

From Fool.com, click on the "CAPS Community" tab. In the list of links below the tab, click "My CAPS."



Underneath your CAPS name and ranking, there's another row of tabs: Choose "Blog."


Over on the right, in teensy-tiny print, there's a link that says "Add new post" -- click that!

Now type in the box (don't forget a headline!), click "preview your post" at the bottom, and then click "post message."


Voila! You, my friend, have just published a blog post.

I want to add subheads -- how do I do that?
At the top of the blog post box, you'll see four buttons:


If you highlight what you want to be bold and click on the B, you'll get bold. If you highlight what you want to be italicized and click on the I, you'll get italics.

How do I add a link?
At the top of the blog post box, you'll see four buttons:


If you highlight what you want to be linked and click on the chain, you'll get a new box that looks like this:


Type or paste the URL of the site you want to link to in the box and click "Insert" -- and you'll have a hyperlink.

How do I submit a blog post to Fool.com to get it published?
If you'd like to suggest to the Editorial team at Fool.com that they publish your blog post as a real live article (findable all over the Web!), click the "Submit to Fool Editorial" button underneath the box that holds the body of the blog and before the "preview my post" button.


If the box is clicked, when you publish your post, the system automatically sends an email to Editorial with a link back to your blog. If they pick it up to publish, they'll email you and let you know.

How does my blog show up for people to read?
If you click the "Blogs" link under the "CAPS Community" tab, you'll see the most recent list of published posts.

    Nonetheless... any time I click on "new blog post" OR to "reply" to any message in the board OR to post a "new message" on the board... I am again diverted to "Community Application to Post..."

    I have tried this with 2 different computers using 2 different browsers (Explorer and Firefox)... so evidently this is not a browser issue...

    I also went to the "blog FAQ" sections. There is no mention of any such problem.

    I am ready to give up participating at Fool.com. Should I give up? Thank you for help, anyone.

    nahamapant, thank you for the suggestion. However I had already tried that, many times. Anyway, what finally seems to have worked is I sent my complaint via Caps Community -> Contact us. After a few days, I received a reply that my account was approved and I "should" be able to post if I logged-out, then logged-in again. Well I had already tried that on two computers with both browsers--but I tried again--and it did not work again... So then I replied to their first reply, sending my log-in and password, and said, "YOU try it please." Then a few days later I received a reply, saying simply: "...sorry for the troubles. You should be all set to post now." And yes, now it looks like I can post! So this was indeed frustrating, but this is a complex website and I give kudos to Motley Fool for their responsiveness to an unpaid member. If you are having any similar problem, use the "contact us," they will respond. As a last resort, send them your log-in and password. That seems to have done it for me. (For security, you can change your password later.)
