On Feb. 5, regional power company, potato packer, heavy construction contractor, and health imaging service provider Otter Tail (NASDAQ:OTTR) released fourth-quarter 2006 earnings for the period ended Dec. 31.

  • The margin compression is an expected result of a maturing and more efficient Midwest power market.
  • Where another power generation outfit would have shown lower revenues, Otter Tail's diversity picked up the slack with strong showings in manufacturing, trucking, and food ingredients, largely outweighing weakness in electric power and plastic pipes.
  • And profits would have increased if it weren't for a non-cash charge of $3.3 million to account for uncertainty of capitalized interest included in the electric service revenues.
