Iomega was down $3/16 Monday, closing at $17 3/8 (-1.07%)

TODAY'S RECAP: It was another Mundane Monday in Iomegaland, with IOM shares surrendering a whopping 3/16ths of a point on low volume. There was nothing to write home about and little substantive posting on our Iomega board, either, although some contributors always manage to bring us some fresh insights, regardless of whatever dearth of news might confront us... for example, one brief thread on MCI's Zip production proved somewhat enlightening.

So, without further ado, let's get into the best posts of the past 24 hours...

INDEX:

1) NSACORAF offers a channel check from San Diego
2) Skichang wonders if MCI is producing Zip drives yet.
3) Ken2Marcus reports that MCI Zips are showing up in Canada and Asia.
4) MarkRogo argues that Compaq's promotion of the LS-120 still represents a formidable challenge to Iomega.
5) MarkRogo discusses his expectations for Zip production in 1997.
6) TMF Turk posts info on MCI and NEC Zip production.
7) MarkRogo adds more to his thoughts on Zip production.
8) TMF Keeler discounts the challenge represented by the LS-120.

And now, the Best of the Board...Started 12:01 am ET 5/19/97:

1) Subj: San Diego Area Channel Check
Date: 19 May 1997 04:29:35 EDT
From: NSACORAF

I was surprised at CompUSA in north San Diego area which had an end counter which had a monitor, with IOM video on Zip, Jaz, & Ditto just by clicking on each name with an ongoing video about the products in general. Very Impressive. They contained much of the ads we have seen at '96 & '97 IOM shareholder meetings, and magazines, and the kid with the brush cut, and the New Orleans cool black guy with the goatee and the colorful clothes and horn. There were also two stand up posters with two of those ads. This was all highlighted by a female voice of the monitor which attracted the males, me too.

On top of the monitor there was a small sign in red color stating: "Don't Forget - Iomega Jaz Disks on left side of the monitor and on the right side of the monitor on top of the monitor a similar sign stating: "Don't Forget ---Iomega Zip disks". The video stated: "real People & real Solutions"..."That's a Jazzin Gig".

INVENTORY:

28 Ext. SCSI Jaz drives $499.99
5 Int. " " " $299.99
5 SCSI Ext. Zip Drives $139.99
5 Battery Packs IOM $ 49.99 ?

8 Syquest EZ Flyer 230 MB portable drives
2 Nomai 540 MB drives ?
4 Eagle Nest Plug in Zip Drive & Nest $249.99
4 PC Interface for Eagle Nest IDE devices $ ?
18 Eagle Nest + LS-120 $299.99
8 Eagle Plug In Tape drive + nest $ ?
34 Sony 2 GB Ext. Tape drives $199.99

I was really surprised to see the above. In the past I usually saw mostly Zips and some Jaz and a few Syquest EZ-Flyers in that area. The only thing that really bothered me was the fact of only 5 Zip drives being present. I will report further on this tomorrow night with more details of the history of Zip in that store, hopefully.

That was this past Friday. Today Sunday I went to Office Depot in the same shopping center area, a new center. The drives and other PC cards, and video cards were locked behind a long (20 ft.) cabinet with the following inventory:

4 Jaz SSCI Portable drives
3 - 3 pack Jaz disks
1 Zip parallel drive -Ext.
4 Zip SCSI ext. drives
7 - 10 pack Zip disks
2 - Ditto 2 Gig drives

NO Syquest or other competing drives or tape drives.

Office Depot in the past never carried much of these type of drives, except for a few Zip drives.

Incidentally CompUsa had one Compaq Presario with a Zip drive internal and Office Depot had a Compaq Presario, an HP Pavillion, & a Packard Bell with internal Zip drives.

Sincerely, Nick
