Monday, May 19, 1997 Iomega was down $1/2 Friday, closing at $17 9/16 (-1.75%)
From: TMF Keeler But Warren, you yourself estimated 0.9-1.0 Jaz drives since last February. How does this square with this line from my post: "...the Jaz drive outsells the EZ-Flyer, SyJet, and LS-120 combined. ;-)" Since last February you can maybe attribute the following sales:
EZ-Flyer = 150K So, Jaz = 900K, the troika above comes in at 535K. -------------------------------------- Patrick, I don't really know how to say this without hurting your feelings, but notwithstanding that you think your figure of 350K drives sold for the LS-120 is generous, I don't think you have any basis to know whether the number is 150K or 1.5 million. But I do know that an officer of OR Technology stated publicly last month that a little under 1 million drives had been sold in the first year of LS-120 production. And what I also know is that, although the recent article about the LS-120 (quoted here many times) chose to focus its theme on Compaq's so-called "disappointment" with the acceptance rate for the LS-120, it indicated that the "inclusion" rate of the drive across CPQ's entire base, is 15%. So far neither you or anyone else has commented on this 15% rate, even though it is undoubtedly far higher than you ever suggested in your own discussions of the LS-120. My guess is you haven't really extrapolated out the impact of this 15% inclusion rate, so I'll save you the trouble. Last year CPQ is believed to have sold slightly more than 7 million computers. Conservatively, they should sell at least 8 million boxes in 1997 (would only require 14% growth). Therefore, a 15% inclusion rate works out to 1.2 million LS-120s. In addition, I believe the same article indicated Compaq intends to expand its offerings of the LS-120 later in the year, when it plans to include slim-line versions in its laptop computers. BTW, no one has here has raised a question as to why, if as the article seeks to convey, Compaq is truly disappointed with the acceptance of the LS-120, they have decided to EXPAND their offerings of the drive? Pretty strange way to manifest disappointment, isn't it? Its interesting that in this forum, where so many posters hold the press in disdain (at least when it comes to the accuracy of stories dealing with Iomega) that the characterization of Compaq's attitude in this article is presumed to be accurate, when both the 15% inclusion rate (which is well above what even I had been willing to presume) and CPQ's intention to expand its LS-120 offerings, just might suggest otherwise. Warren
