WYOMISSING, Pa. (AP) _ Shares of Carpenter Technology Corp. climbed Tuesday after the specialty metals and engineered products company reported better-than-expected earnings for its fiscal second quarter.

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Countrywide Financial Corp., the nation's largest mortgage lender, said Tuesday it swung to a loss in the fourth quarter due to rising loss provisions and impairment charges as more borrowers fell behind on mortgage payments. The earnings fell well short of Wall Street estimates.

CINCINNATI (AP) _ Convergys Corp., a provider of call-center and billing services, said Tuesday that fourth-quarter earnings rose 2 percent to beat Wall Street expectations, despite a slight decline in revenue.

CLAYTON, Mo. (AP) _ Chemical products maker Olin Corp. said late Monday its 2007 fourth-quarter profit fell 43 percent, hurt by a loss from discontinued operations related to the sale of its metals business.

ZEELAND, Mich. (AP) _ Gentex Corp., which makes rearview mirrors and commercial fire protection products, said Tuesday its fourth-quarter profit rose 3.4 percent as a jump in sales more than offset litigation charges.

RESTON, Va. (AP) _ Homebuilder and mortgage banker NVR Inc. said Tuesday fourth-quarter earnings fell 50 percent, as sales fell and more homeowners backed out of contracts amid tighter lending standards.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) _ Medical technology company Kinetic Concepts Inc. said Tuesday fourth-quarter profit jumped 30 percent, matching Wall Street expectations, on higher equipment rental and sales revenue for wound healing devices.
