Arrowhead Research Corp. said Thursday its Calando Pharmaceuticals subsidiary has asked the Food and Drug Administration for permission to start an early stage trial of a cancer drug candidate.
Calando Pharmaceuticals wants to begin an early clinical trial of the drug, designated CALAA-01. The main goals of early stage clinical trials, called Phase I studies, are designed to find out if a drug is safe and if it has any serious side effects.
CALAA-01 is an RNA interference drug designed to stop diseases by finding the genes that cause them, and turning them off. Calando wants to test the drug on patients with tumors that have either metastasized or cannot be removed by surgery.
The stock added 5 cents, or 2 percent, to $2.51 in afternoon trading.
