Shares of multi-utility companies were mixed Thursday as investors remained torn over whether to turn to such "safe" stocks amid market volatility.

Here is how some stocks in the sector fared in morning trading:

Centerpoint Energy Inc. rose 6 cents to $14.02.

Dominion Resources Inc. gained 13 cents to $40.26.

PG&E Corp. fell 9 cents to $36.55.

Exelon Corp. dropped 14 cents to $78.96.
