Washington Mutual Inc., up $2.98 at $13.15

The country's largest savings and loan is close to landing a $5 billion cash infusion from private equity group TPG and other investors.

Novartis AG, down $2.12 at $50

The Swiss pharmaceutical maker will spend about $39 billion in a two-step bid for a majority stake in Alcon Inc., which makes Opti-Free contact lens solution.

Eastman Chemical Co., up $2.05 at $68.38

Strong sales volume and higher selling prices will offset high raw material costs and lift first-quarter earnings per share above the high end of analysts' estimates.

Motorola Inc., up 17 cents at $9.84

The cell phone maker will back two of Carl Icahn's nominees for its board of directors in exchange for him dropping litigation against the cell phone maker.

NASDAQ

Microsoft Corp., unchanged at $29.16

The company will launch a proxy fight for control of Yahoo Inc., if it doesn't agree to a takeover within three weeks.

Apple Inc., up $2.81 at $155.89

A Thomas Weisel Partners analyst upgraded the stock and forecast strong operating margins and market share in coming years.

LifeCell Corp., up $7.31 at $50.46

Medical technology company Kinetic Concepts Inc. is buying the medical products company for $1.7 billion, or $51 per share, thus entering the biosurgery market.

ScanSource Inc., down $4.56 at $29.93

Slowing growth in its barcode and point-of-sale technology segment will cause third-quarter sales to miss expectations, the electronic equipment supplier said.
