The Standard & Poor's 500 index slipped at midday Tuesday, as a stream of earnings reports provided a mixed picture about corporate profits.
The S&P 500 fell 3.88 points to 1,324.44.
Shares of Manitowoc Co. tumbled $3.92, or 9.9 percent, to $35.74 after a Banc of America Securities analyst downgraded shares of the construction machinery maker.
Shares of Forest Labs Inc. lost $3.63, or 9.1 percent, to $36.17. Earlier Tuesday, the drug maker offered a 2009 profit outlook below analyst expectations.
Shares of metals-maker Titanium Metals Corp. shed $1.23, or 7.7 percent, to $14.77.
Among the gainers, Compuware Corp. soared 79 cents, or 11.3 percent, to $7.78. On Monday, the software company offered fourth-quarter guidance above Wall Street estimates.
Shares of Regions Financial Corp. climbed $1.71, or 9.2 percent, to $20.27 after the regional bank said its first-quarter earnings climbed 1 percent.
And shares of technology and business outsourcing company Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp gained $2.17, or 8.1 percent, to $29.14.
