Closing Glance: Biotechnology

Shares of biotechnology companies closed lower Thursday after ImClone Systems Inc. said it swung to a first-quarter loss a writedown for failed auction rate securities.

The American Stock Exchange's biotechnology index fell 7.53 points 749.54. The index tracks several bellwether stocks. The Nasdaq Stock Market's biotechnology index, which covers a broader range of small- and midcap stocks, rose 2.62 points, to 806.01.

Here's how several key biotechnology stocks performed Thursday:

Gilead Sciences Inc., up 52 cents to $51.02.

Amgen Inc., down 29 cents to $42.40.

ImClone Systems Inc., down $1.25 to $47.50.

Genentech Inc., down 77 cents to $72.92.
