The Nasdaq 100 index ended higher Thursday, with gains posted by UAL Corp., NII Holdings Inc., and Marvell Technology Group Ltd.
The index, which includes 100 of the largest nonfinancial securities listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market, rose 17.92 points to 1,924.58. The broader Nasdaq composite gained 23.71 points to 2,428.92.
Shares of United Airlines parent UAL added $1.45, or 10.4 percent, to $15.40 as the price of oil fell. Fuel is one of the biggest costs for an airline.
NII Holdings, a wireless service provider rose $3.05, or 7.5 percent, to $43.67. The company posted a higher first-quarter profit on subscriber growth.
And Marvell rose 70 cents, or 5.6 percent, to $13.16, leading semiconductor stocks higher.
On the losing side, shares of Starbucks Corp. declined $1.86, or 10.4 percent, to $15.99, after the coffee chain offered a disappointing second-quarter forecast.
Level 3 Communications Inc. lost 16 cents, or 5.5 percent, to $2.75. Some analysts lowered their outlooks, following the network service provider's first-quarter results, which missed expectations.
Shares of Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. shed $1.05, or 4.1 percent, to $24.90, despite positive data on hepatitis C drug candidate telaprevir.
